Her Majesty Theatre London - A Glimpse of Her Majesty’s Glorifying History

An existence that goes beyond two centuries is too strong enough to prove any theatre’s majestic significance in the world of entertainment. With presence that sprawls till 1705, Her Majesty’s Theatre London has travelled a long way. It has witnessed many trends in entertainment being set while a score of them is broken. While many such venues of the bygone era have failed to stand the test of time and have crumpled down in years, Her Majesty’s Theatre has continued to evolve with the passage of every year.

Towards the beginning of the seventeenth century, London’s two oldest theatres, Lincoln’s Inn and Theatre Drury Lane were thronged with the growing crowd of theatregoers. In 1705, Her Majesty’s Theatre London came up to share the load and today it is one of the oldest stages of London falling next to Theatre Drury Lane. When the plans for the current site were finalized, services of Charles J. Phipps were hired to offer it an incredible appearance. It was an era of theatres in London and Phipps went on to design numerous of them, which still bears today a reflection of this architectural genius.

Herbert Beerbohm Tree owned a theater in the Haymarket and made immense profits from there. The returns were so much that it inspired Tree to come up with another one. Tree shared an emotional association with the theatre as along with founding his renowned Royal Academy of Dramatic Art here in 1904, he continued to reside here until his death in 1917. During his association with the venue, he presented some immensely successful performances including the Shakespeare productions. The period also saw hosting of shows from notable playwrights by George Bernard Shaw and Noel Coward.

Since then, it has been home to quality entertainment for ages and while doing so, it has witnessed performances by many theatre legends. During the World War I, the venue hosted performances of Oscar Asche’s sensational, Chu Chin Chow. The show debuted here in 1916 and continued to woo audiences for the following five years. The record breaking 2,238 performances that the musical enjoyed here remained unbroken for nearly four decades. Along with the presently running the Phantom of the Opera, some other shows that have enjoyed widespread success here are The West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof.

Making its West End debut in 1986, The Phantom of the Opera is enjoying a record breaking run here. The musical is a stage adaptation of the gothic novel by Gaston Leroux. The musical brings before audiences the life that prevailed beneath the stages of opera houses in the nineteenth century France. Featuring songs like All I Ask Of You, Think Of Me and The Point Of No Return, the musical is an enthralling piece suitable for audiences of all genres. Featuring the tale of the Phantom and his beloved the Chritine Daen, the show is a heart pondering tale. An international classic, the show has been seen by millions of audiences worldwide. An Andrew Lloyd Weber’s masterpiece, the piece has been an international award winning one and witnessed unprecedented success at the venue.
