How To Bypass Blocked Sites

There are many websites all over the world that for one reason or another are being blocked from people visiting the site, people need a way to bypass blocked sites in order to regain their freedom. There are entire governments of countries that block access to specific sites and videos as a form of media censorship, there are public places like schools and university that block inappropriate content from being accessed on their grounds and then there are also households that also block certain sites being accessed to protect their children.

Unfortunately this censorship of media is happening more and more which is a violation of people's rights to read and speak what they like. Some of the countries that are imposing the most amount of internet censorship at the moment are North Korea, Burma, China, Cuba, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Syria, Tunisia and Vietnam although most western countries are also censoring certain things including the United Kingdom and the USA. Websites that are censored in these such places include Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Yahoo, Blogspot, Vimeo, Tibet Post, porn sites and most sites that offer proxy services and Private VPN services. Most of the time these sites are blocked so the government can control the media, and the information that the population receive, thereby eliminating any bad press about the current government. Media censorship has been going on for a very long time so it should be no surprise that it would also occur on the internet but there are ways to get around it and bypass blocked sites.

Schools and universities also block access to certain sites mainly so the network is only used for things related to school. Many students try to bypass blocked sites to use the network for such things as playing games, using Facebook, downloading movies illegally etc. but usually fail in their attempt by using obvious proxies. The network administrator can set up blocks much the same way a home owner can do the same thing so their children cannot access sites with inappropriate content such as porn. Software can be purchased to block anything you like and it is relatively easy to set up but there is always a way around this so you can go to whatever site you like.

In more recent times laws have been passed in the U.K. and in Pennsylvania U.S.A. that will block all porn from the internet. The U.K. will action this new law in late 2013 while the one in Pennsylvania was actioned all the way back in 2003. So as you can imagine this has caused many people to want to bypass blocked sites and for more reasons than just the obvious ones that they still want to watch porn. When they initiated the block on these porn sites in Pennsylvania they did so by just doing a block on the websites IP address which caused havoc on other sites also as it wiped out their business overnight. You see an IP address for a web site is like a business's physical address where the server is, so the government thought if you block the address then it would be fine but in fact it blocked many more websites that have nothing to do with the porn sites. The way most website hosting servers work these days is have thousands of different websites on the same (shared) servers running together as it is much more efficient and cost effective. This means that a church or girl scouts group could have their website on the same server and IP address as a porn site therefore end up blocked. When laws like this are passed there are always innocent casualties, peoples businesses wiped out overnight and they cannot do a thing about it except start again.

Now there are a few different ways to bypass blocked sites that both have their advantages and disadvantages. The two best ways are to use a Proxy Service or to use a Private VPN Service. A Proxy is effectively just a setting change you can do in your browser that will rout your internet traffic through another location (a proxy) where the content or site is not blocked. This will work in most cases and you can get free ones to use as well as paid services which generally work a lot better as many free ones are taken down or broken fairly quickly. The second option to bypass blocked sites, which in my opinion is far better, is to use a VPN service (Virtual Private Network). By using a VPN you will be able to access whatever you like while also encrypting all of the internet traffic between you and the VPN. By encrypting the data your information and details about what you are doing cannot be seen by the government or administrator. This is invaluable in my opinion because if using a Proxy then what you are doing can still be seen by whoever is censoring the internet whereas with a VPN you are fully secure. An added bonus to this is that protects you when using the internet on free Wi-Fi in public places, such as café's and hotels, your information can be stolen very easily by even a novice computer user.

No matter what type of internet censorship you are experiencing you can bypass blocked sites by using one of the two mentioned methods. If you want to cover your tracks a bit more and be safe then definitely use a VPN but if you are not too worried than just use a proxy and you will be fine. The way that things are going in the world currently leads me to believe that more and more censorship is coming. This is especially evident now because it is creeping in to the western world where we are under the illusion that we have a right to free speech and free media.
