How to Choose Reputable Movers

If you are looking for a moving company, you may have found the task of choosing just the right movers daunting, especially if you live in or near a large city and there are many moving companies in your area. However, if you know what the distinguishing marks of a reputable moving company are and ask the right questions when contacting your potential moving company, then finding the right movers can be easy.

There are several questions you should ask when you contact prospective movers, such as what types of services they offer and if they are available on the date(s) that you need them. You will also want to ask the following:

Is your moving company rated well by the Better Business Bureau (BBB)? Perhaps this is one of the most important questions you could ask during your search for a moving company, because you'll want to immediately rule out any movers that don't have a favorable rating from the BBB. Generally, the BBB ranks companies on a letter-grade scale ranging from A+ (excellent) through F (poor) and takes into account factors such as how long the business has been running, the number of unanswered or unresolved complaints, and any government actions against a business.

Do you offer full or replacement value protection? Of course, none of us wants to think about snafus and other unfortunate events, but when they arise, you want to at least know your items will be covered. Moving companies provide valuations, which determine how much liability they have in the unlikely event that they need to be repaired or replaced.

Do you require a deposit? Generally, most movers do not require a down payment, and if they do, you should ask them why they require the deposit. While a mandatory deposit isn't necessarily the sign of an unscrupulous mover, it's important to know that many fly-by-night moving companies will ask for a deposit so they can take the money and run.

What is your U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) number? All reputable moving companies should be operating under USDOT regulations and have a USDOT number. You'll want to avoid doing business with any moving company that does not have a verifiable USDOT number.

What is your company's physical address? Finding out a company's address is pivotal in determining whether or not a company is legitimate. If a moving company that you're considering has only a post office box, this should be a red flag, as those movers may be shifting the location of their operations on a frequent basis to stay one step ahead of the law. So, you should only go with a moving company that can list a physical address as well as a phone number.

While it may take a little homework to find a moving company that meets all the requirements, it will pay off when you find movers that do. After all, when you choose just the right movers, you can rest assured that your personal belongings will be in capable hands and will safely arrive at their destination.
