How To Improve Your Writing Skills And Write Effectively

I sincerely believe that as an affiliate marketer, the basics of writing effectively are a must, even if you may outsource your article writing. Once you have a website or blog, you will need to do some writing one way or another, so you might as well make a concerted effort to improve your writing skills. Writing effectively is not such a difficult feat to master if you can put in some effort and seek help from those who know better.

You don't have to be an award winning writer to write effectively to the extent of having your own original articles published on article directories on the internet. The secret of writing effectively is to know exactly what you want to convey in your writing. So, mastery of the subject matter you are writing about is a must.

Secondly you need to write as simply as you can. How do you do this, you may well ask. Always try as much as possible to write in the active voice. For example, instead of writing: 'the chocolate was eaten by John", it is better to write: 'John ate the chocolate.' As you can see, the second sentence is shorter, simpler and direct to the point. Of course, there will be instances where you will be compelled to write in the passive voice such in the following sentence: "It rained heavily yesterday," Trying to write this sentence in the active voice would be impossible and silly to write: " the rain rained yesterday."

Another important aspect of effective writing is making sure you avoid ambiguities in your sentences. For example, the following sentence could have one or two meanings: "Peter asked Paul whether he could play midfield." This sentence is ambiguous since we cannot be sure whether the antecedent "he" is Peter or Paul. So in order to clarify this statement you could rewrite the sentence in two different ways that will make the reader sure of what you really mean. You could perhaps write:

"Peter asked Paul who betwen them should play midfield," or alternatively:

"Paul, can I play midfield?" Peter asked.

In these two last sentences, we are quite certain of who is doing what.

Poor spelling is no excuse for any would be writer. If not sure of how to spell a word, have a dictionary handy on your desk. A spell checker on your computer will also be of invaluable help. Punctuation is also an important part of effective writing. Remember that writing is an unnatural form of communication, hence punctuation helps in relaying mood, pause, interjection or end of a sentence. It will be advisable to have a good grammar book from which you could learn to master the basic rules of grammar.

Lastly, writing improves with practice and perseverance. The more you do it, the better you will become. Also it is a good idea to read the articles of other writers as much as possible. This way you will soon internalise the art of writing good articles and have them published all over the net in article directories. There is nothing as satisfying as seeing a message from someone from another part of the world commenting about the good content of your article.

It can only mean one thing: that you got your message accross and someone out there was impressed becuase your writing was effective.
