How To Make Your Mobile Website Standout From Your Mobile App

While your mobile app and website are bound to share similarities, primarily because they are designed for the same devices, it is still important to make a distinction between the two so users do not get confused and so that each option stands out from one another. At the same time, you do not want to completely disassociate the two to the point of hurting your brand. Finding this odd sort of balance is not a simple process although there are definitely things your company can do and not do to help your chances. To help you make such a distinction, here are a couple quick suggestions for you to consider when working with your mobile app and website.

Full Capabilities

In order to make your mobile app stand out from your mobile website and vice versa, you should consider giving one full capabilities, and the other a limited amount. For instance, you could give your mobile app the ability for customers to only buy and checkout a limited number of your products. On the other hand, if your app is only compatible with one mobile operating system like Android, making your mobile website accessible on a wider range of devices will you allow users to have unlimited access to all of your products offered online. While this may not be the best strategy for every company, it certainly makes sense in the aforementioned scenario. Ultimately, you will need to decide whether taking a similar strategy is best for your company, or perhaps you will wish to take an alternative route such as giving your mobile app full capabilities and limiting the use of your mobile website.

What Not To Do

One of the biggest mistakes that companies make when aiming to have one of their mobile offerings stand out is completely changing its design. While it may seem like a viable way to make either your mobile website or app predominant and to a certain extent it may be doing so is a nightmare from a marketing and branding perspective. In other words, regardless of how your users differentiate between your mobile app and website, you should keep the design interface, logo and color schemes as similar as possible relating to the brand of your company. If you do not, then it will create even worse confusion. The last thing that any company wants is to have their brand image dissolve or be harmed because their mobile website and app are entirely unrecognizable.

Making either your mobile website or app stand out from your company's other mobile offerings is incredibly tricky. On the one hand you do not want to hurt your brand image by making them too different, however you also want them to have an identity all their own. The best way to do so is to think of the two as siblings. You want people to know they are in the same family (your brand), but you also want people to be able to tell them apart from one another. By doing so, you will allow customers to use one predominantly for making online purchases and interacting with your company. The other will become sort of a side note, albeit with its own mobile presence and identity, which is what you should surely aim for from your mobile offerings.
