There are some people who are naturally extrovert and others who are extremely introvert; a good blend of the two would be the ambivert, of course. Getting rid of the fear of being shy can be quite an exercise for a timid person.
The first way is to get to the root cause as to why the person is afraid of social situations. Some are apprehensive when speaking to large crowds and sit quietly because they fear that they cannot contribute to the conversation intelligently. Perceptions of people can be quite a problem as well and that is why there are so many people who prefer taking a book along with them in a public space or even use their cell phones to deal with their lack of conversational abilities. An effective way to move out of this rut is to self-reflect and figure out where the insecurity lies and why one believes nobody wants to hear what one has to say.
To improve the situation, it is a good idea to meet like- minded people in a smaller group. This usually works because one can get out of the shyness rather well, when he/she is spoken to kindly and appreciatively. At this point of time, one can contribute one's point of view which will be applauded. Social networking on the internet is not the solution; in fact it has created more introverts than ever before. Meeting people face-to-face is the best policy. Join a class or an exercise schedule in a gym. Even a dancing class can be an excellent ice breaker. Help an old person cross the street if need be, as they are a lot more experienced and positive about life. If this is one's calling it is a good idea to volunteer to help out at a senior citizen's home. But if one is young, ultimately it is also important to mix around with people of the same age group.

One must also take things slow, because anything that has been over- thought can cause a panic attack. With baby steps one can reach the finish point super fast, using the right approach. Engage in small talk with people, preferably in a small crowd and increase this as the days go by. As one gets better at this, and one almost always will, one can even address a large gathering and let go of the old fears of being shy with low self esteem. There are other people who opt to stay in the background, either because they believe that they do not fit in well with the crowd or that they will be criticized or judged. These apprehensions must be eliminated completely from the mindset as they can continue throughout life. At times in a particularly controlling or unequal relationship, the dominant partner may take it upon himself or herself to behave in an authoritative manner. This can translate into the other person feeling subservient.
It is important to rectify this situation by talking things out honestly or if the relationship is not going anywhere, seek counseling.
