How To Self Publish A Book - Three Things That You Need to Decide Before You Write a Word

Self publishing a book is an extremely satisfying and rewarding achievement but you want to sell your book too, right? Here are three things that you need to decide before you write a word, if you want your self published book to be a bestseller.

1. Print or e-book?

Both have definite benefits. An e-book costs nothing to produce, in fact you can sell millions of e-books and not spend one single cent on production or distribution. However, not everyone is an online shopper or reader so you may be missing out on a demographic that would be important to your bottom line.

Print, on the other hand costs money to produce but is extremely satisfying to hold a copy of your printed book in your hand. Additionally, if you plan on using your book as a book business card, then you need printed copies to do so.

Decide, before you write a book, what format you’re going to publish in first. It doesn’t mean that you’re completely eliminating the other option but it will help you establish a marketing plan, format your book, and even write it.

2. Who is your target market?

Who on earth is going to read your book? You absolutely must know this before you sit down to write it. Why? How else are you going to solve their problems and provide them a benefit if you don’t know who you’re writing the book for?

Not sure where to start? Begin by finding a group of people that are in need of specific information. It should be in a field that you’re interested in or already an expert in. The ideas and options are endless. Find a select group of people that are seeking information and write a book for them. 3. Identify your target market’s biggest problem and then solve it.

Book selling is as much about solving a problem and providing a benefit as it is about writing. Your book has to provide a benefit to your reader. It has to solve a problem. People read books for several reasons: they want to be smarter, richer, sexier, happier, more in control, thinner, more beautiful, more respected, you get the picture.

Even if you’re writing about how to choose a software product or how to coach a basketball team, tell them how you’re going to make them better. Choosing the right software product may make them more money and may save them money. Coaching a basketball team well will earn them the respect and love of their team and their basketball peers.

Once you have chosen your publication format, you understand who your reader is, and you know exactly how you’re going to provide them the biggest bang for their buck, you’re on your way to writing and publishing a best selling book.
