Like most women’s magazines, Marie Claire devotes considerable coverage to health, career and money, fitness and relationship advice. Past articles include “Boost Your Mood, Memory and Skin with These Foods,” “Reinvent Your Work Life” and “Why I Never Should Have Given Him My Number.”
Marie Claire magazine also covers beauty and fashion including trends, beauty how-to’s and thorough coverage of the fashion industry. Marie Claire magazine always presents the latest fashion news for each season. Some of the magazine’s competitors in the fashion magazine group are Elle magazine, Glamour magazine and Lucky magazine.
Marie Claire also features celebrities on its covers. Recent celebrities featured on Marie Claire covers include actress Rachel McAdams, actress Reese Witherspoon and actress and comedian Tina Fey.
Unlike most women’s magazines, Marie Claire also focuses a lot of coverage on women around the world and their needs, struggles and life stories. There is also considerable coverage on current domestic and international issues that women face including “The Wives of White Collar Criminals”, “How Women across the World are Coping with the Economy” and “India’s Poorest Women Fight Back.”
In March 2009, in response to the waning economy and tough times the magazine industry is currently facing, Marie Claire magazine launched a reality series called “Running in Heels” on the Style Network. The documentary-style show follows the lives and work of the Marie Claire magazine staff and features three interns, Ashley Gosik, Samantha DeZur and Talita Silva. “Running in Heels” has been compared to and was inspired by the hit book and movie “The Devil Wears Prada.”
“Running in Heels” is a part of what magazine industry insiders call brand extension; brand extension is currently a major trend in the magazine world as magazines try to find new ways to connect with readers in the waning economy and evolving media world. Other magazines including Elle magazine, Real Simple magazine and Martha Stewart Living magazine have also launched brand-extension campaigns in the form of retail products and reality shows.
Marie Claire magazine’s fashion director, Nina Garcia, is also a judge on the widely-popular reality-competition show, Project Runway, hosted by supermodel Heidi Klum.
