Loving yourself is one thing but over loving yourself screams of megalomania. So why are there more people today in this boat? Perhaps because the idea of power and prestige seems like one that practically every third person desires at some point in her/his life. There is no sure reason as to why Narcissistic Personality Disorder takes place in an individual but it could be due to excessive pampering in the early years, or a dysfunctional family life. One can also attribute this to a condition in the brain that struggles with perception and delusions of grandeur. There is a tendency to presume that a person who displays the symptoms detailed below is perhaps a showoff.
Symptoms and Traits:
Here are a couple of traits that suggest this behavioral pattern
-Over simplifying things to be the center of attention
-Exaggeration about anything, even the minutest detail
-Lack of the emotional capability to respond to another's feelings
-The lure of success being a magnet
-Taking advantage of others and laying down orders and rules that must be followed
-Jealousy (of others) and perceiving that others are jealous of you
The general tone suggests that a person who displays the traits characterized above could be over confident, when in actuality the person is actually limited in self-esteem. There is a tendency, however, to perceive that the individual is way ahead and above others and that s/he actually considers him/herself suited to being on a pedestal. Monopolization of conversations is a key indicator as there is a feeling of superiority. There is also the tendency to look down on others, believing that they do not make the cut. The other noticeable traits are a need to display one's wealth and success to the public with snazzy cars, properties, and a highly charged lifestyle.
Treatment and Preventive Methods
The problem here is that in public, there is one face but in private, the person knows that s/he experiences a sense of shame or even humiliation. The attempt to belittle someone in public is to get back some modicum of appreciation. To get out of this state of confusion, it is imperative to undergo tests and treatment to get to a better place. Once the doctor determines that one has the illness, treatment methods through counseling and group therapy will definitely help the person. Since many people who exhibit this illness are on a cocktail of either drugs, sex, alcohol, power, and other 'highs' they have to admit this and do without these crutches as a part of therapy.
Many times the illness takes root from childhood because of abusive or manipulative methods either at home or in a place that is supposed to be safe. By talking about this under hypnosis, in group or individual therapy, the person can slowly and surely get back her/his life. After treatment, it is important to stick with the program in case of regression to the old ways. There is no sure way of getting out of the zone, but with care, people can change their life and be happier with themselves.
