Parenting 101 - 3 Tips on Implementing Positive Parenting

Many parents today are interested in developing positive parenting skills. While there's no exact definition for positive parenting, it usually refers to focusing on rewarding good behavior rather than on punishing unwanted behavior. This encourages the child to continue behaving in appropriate ways while building his or her self esteem. Would like to use this parenting approach? In this article, we'll discuss ways on how to practice positive parenting.

Part of being a positive parent is taking time out for yourself. You can't be an effective parent to your children if you're stressed out all the time. Your energy and patience are in limited supply and you also have to learn not just to take care of your children but yourself as well. Taking care of yourself becomes harder once you have kids, as so much of your time goes towards their care and upkeep. However, you still need to make time for regular exercise, eat healthily, and sleep well. If you are under stress, whether it's from your family, job or other issues, make sure you address this. When you take care of yourself, you'll be a lot better at taking care of your children. When your child behaves inappropriately, you need to correct it immediately. However, when you do so, don't directly criticize your child. When you're correcting your child, focus on the undesirable behavior instead of on your child. Explain to your child exactly why that behavior is not appropriate. Let's say your child comes home from school and shows you his or her low test score. You'll need to explain to your child that low scores can be avoided if he or she studies harder. Never call your child names or even tell your child how "bad" or "stupid" he or she is. Your child needs to know why you have set certain rules and that you expect him or her to abide by those rules. Don't reinforce the inappropriate behavior in your child by calling your child names. Your focus should be on correcting the undesirable behavior of your child, not criticizing your child.

You can practice being a positive parent by encouraging your child to explore new things to satisfy his or her curiosity. Get your child education toys. Your child may have a natural talent for art, or be interested in some type of learning. Places like planetariums, museums, and zoos are wonderful places to take your child, as these will encourage his or her interest even more. Children like to play on the computer or watch television. You can use these devices as learning tools. There are, for example, computer games that teach kids about science, or how to speak in foreign languages.

You've just read a few tips on how you can practice positive parenting. No child is perfect, but if you are to be successful at positive parenting, you'll have to make sure that your children don't continue displaying unwanted behavior. When you're a positive parent, you actively find ways to encourage your children to display the kind of behavior you'd like to see.
