Poems on Encouragement are Powerful Verses that Inspire the Spirit

poems on encouragement are like joyful prayers that uplift the soul and fill one with hope. These words of literature are an expression of human feelings with inspiration to cope and conquer life's obstacles and trials. They can also take one to a higher and deeper level of understanding. After all, there's not a person in this world who hasn't faced a trying event. Life is filled with both happiness and tragedy. It's when we're going through a tough time that we need support from others and words of encouragement the most. No one is exempt from hard times. Even the rich and famous experience them.

If we take a look at Rose Kennedy's life, she certainly had some tragic times that would've tested anyone's spirit. With two sons assassinated, one killed in World War II, one daughter killed in a plane crash and one daughter left lifeless after a lobotomy, it's amazing her spirit survived it all. Often, Rose Kennedy turned to prayer and poems on encouragement to help her through it all. She's well-known for her famous quote ""Birds sing after a storm; why shouldn't people feel as free to delight in whatever sunlight remains to them?" Without a doubt, Rose Kennedy was a woman determined to persevere and still enjoy life. If her words of wisdom don't speak in terms of encouragement, nothing does.

Poems on encouragement can be found throughout history. Kipling was well-known for his poems that focused on never despairing when defeated and staying composed under stress. His famous poem "If" was named Britain's favorite poem in 1995. Above the entryway at Wimbledon's All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, a couplet from the poem is inscribed. It reads "If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two imposters just the same." Bill Cosby found great solace in this poem after his son was shot and killed in 1997. For Cosby, the poem was very calming and gave him the courage to continue on. Joni Mitchell even used some of Kipling's poems on encouragement and put them to music on her "Shine" album. Other artists'poems on encouragement can be previewed, downloaded and purchased at iTunes. There are also websites where you can download for free.

Emily Dickinson is another famed poet known for her encouraging poem "Hope is the Thing with Feathers." In this poem, Dickinson uses the dove as a symbol for hope and encouragement. The dove never stops singing a tune. Earnest Hemingway was known for his poems that inspired encouragement with defiance. In his poem "Invictus," he describes the hardness and darkness of life but casts man as unbreakable facing it. This inspirational poem reads with a shudder with its indomitable courage. Here is an excerpt from "Invictus:"

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll.

I am the master of my fate:

I am the captain of my soul.

In reading just this small excerpt, one can feel the writer's determination to face and conquer his own demons. It's definitely a poem that fills one with strength, power and fortitude. Poems on encouragement are forever eternal.
