Selecting The Best CMS Platform to Suit Your Needs

Hey Gabe, thanks for taking the time to answer my question. My biggest problem when it comes to creating a website is figuring out what CMS platform I should use. How can I determine which platform I should use?

For those who don't know, I will spare you the Google search. CMS stands for "Content Management System" and is used to create a website. CMS, such as WordPress, are typically used for blogging but can also be used as software to create a website. Due to the increasing trend in blogging and the high volume of website content that needs to be managed, people look for CMS solutions that can help them with day-to-day content related tasks. Webmasters will find it easy to enter and edit information using a CMS platform. Also, the overall management of the website gets easier when you have the right content management system installed. Among the most popular CMS systems are Drupal, Joomla, Magento, and WordPress.

With Drupal, you can implement core design features, offer flexible rules, easily manage content, and have the opportunity to provide active updates. Joomla offers many types of customizable layouts, topic sections for contributors, and service sections that can be edited. However nothing beats WordPress when it comes to flexibility, plug-ins, and popularity. Magento is specifically made for e-commerce solutions and makes things such as listing products, sending invoices, and accepting payments easier.

WordPress is the most used CMS for websites. Educational institutes like Harvard use it for their website. With WordPress you can upload images, create new blog posts, and do a whole lot more. Below are good criteria that I have summed up that will help you find the best CMS platform for your website:

Ease of Use A CMS that's easy to use is an important factor for installation. This should be the case especially if you have little to no knowledge of HTML language. The system should also make it easier for developers to update web content. WordPress is the easiest to use of all. People with no prior HTML experience are using it to upload their website content. The content is what matters the most in a website since it compels, converts, and sells. If you cannot manage your content, you will not be able to achieve success.

Design Freedom Designers appreciate systems that allow them to express their skills. There is no need for a designer to be told to design boxes or other areas when the need for them isn't there. If the CMS system doesn't allow you to express your artistic freedom when it comes to designing, your chances of delivering the best to your clients will be curtailed. There are certain experiences and features that clients demand from the web designers they hire. All CMS platforms have great customized designs and high quality templates that you can install.

Third Party Integration and API Over the past decade or so, I have personally noticed a considerable improvement in CMS platforms. All CMS platforms provide API and third party access to be able to make customized designs and features. If a designer is to provide unique and customized solutions, there is a need to integrate CMS and a number of other applications. Joomla and Drupal are the CMS platforms with the best third party integration and API.

Integrated Capability for E-commerce Businesses are finding it important to sell their products on the internet due to the growing advantages of online selling. There are many packages available that can make this happen. Having a CMS that can be managed with high levels of ease and effectiveness will help a great deal. Some content management systems such as Joomla have this capability. This is one of the main reasons why users will select Joomla over other CMS. When you add an online store at a reasonable cost, you will find it's a great asset. WordPress has also gone a long way in developing its own free e-commerce plug-ins to integrate online payment solutions.

Consider the Cost A good CMS platform has the ability to reduce development costs. Get one that can offer you a number of options regarding plug-ins, modules, and other items. This will not only make you competitive but also help to position you for success in your market.

Reporting Analytics A good CMS has reporting analytics that enables the website owner to track where traffic is coming from as well as keep track of the pages many visitors like checking. Make sure the system has the ability for backward compatibility since this could be handy in the long run. Drupal offers the best services as far as this topic is concerned.

To conclude, the best CMS is the one that allows you ease of access, has the best reporting analytics, and is also cost-effective. In addition, the best CMS should allow for full e-commerce integration while letting the web designer exercise freedom on design choices. Joomla is one content management system that offers a lot of freedom. On the other hand, WordPress wins the race when it comes to ease of use and flexibility.
