The Code Of Ethics That A Child Care Centre Should Observe

When a child care centre is run in a professional manner, parents are sure to appreciate the valuable service provided to their children. Such professionalism would be quite evident if the centre abides by a certain code of ethics.

The Early Childhood Australia (ECA) Code of Ethics, first developed in 1990, is an invaluable tool that guides caregivers in the appropriate behaviour befitting a professional group. The Code of Ethics has certain key values: respect, honesty, democracy, integrity, courage, justice, inclusivity, education, and social and cultural responsiveness.

This Code of Ethics prescribes certain guidelines on how caregivers should act towards children:

Code Of Ethics In Relation To Children

A caregiver is expected to act in the best interest of the child that he/ she is responsible for. Such a child would have specific rights, clearly indicated in the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child (1991), which must be fully respected and advocated for.

By recognizing children as active participants within families, schools and other communities, a caregiver would be better placed to help the child develop the necessary skills needed to live and flourish in such communities. Appropriately qualified child care service providers would also ensure that they inculcate in children a sense of responsibility to both humanity and the environment. This will help the children grow up to be responsible members of the global society.

As much as the teacher is a valuable influence in a child's life, he/ she should always respect the irreplaceable and special relationship between the child and parent. This means that the teacher shouldn't do anything that would distrust the relationship such a child has with the parents.

A healthy and safe environment must always be maintained within the early learning centre. This involves creating an environment that builds the self-worth and dignity of each and every child. A critical factor in building such self-worth in children is by showing respect for the child's contributions. This is a vital aspect that complements the learning and development of a child.

If there are any children or families that have additional needs, the learning centre should strive to do all that is possible to accommodate such needs. In this pursuit, the caregiver should ensure that no rights of the child are hindered or denied, but he/ she is given ample opportunity to exercise such rights.

Every child is unique and possesses great potential, which should be fostered in the learning environment. This means that children should not be put through undue pressure, but be allowed to enjoy their childhood. A well-organized learning system would always focus on giving children space enough to learn at their own pace.

Academic learning should always be complemented with various aspects of cultural and linguistic identities, as an acknowledgement of the holistic nature of a child's development. A well-run system would help kids develop more than their intellectual or cognitive abilities, but also foster development of social skills.

Most of all, discrimination of children should never be allowed, whether it's based on age, gender, ability, family structure, economic status or other factors.
