The Dangers of Not Letting a Trained Professional Do Laser Hair Removal Procedures

Despite the use of shaving, waxing, and electrolysis, removing unwanted body hair has always been a losing battle for most. Doctors and day spas are telling everyone that laser hair removal is the best way to get rid of all that unwanted hair in their bodies just a few years after the approval of the procedure by the Food and Drug Association.

While laser treatment is considered to be by far the best answer to unwanted boddy hair growth, it does not completely remove hair from the area that is treated. To achieve the best results, you will need to spend thousands of dollars to pay for a large number of treatments. Laser hair removal can be a risky option for some. There are certain skin types that could get scarred or whose pigment could change when the treatment is given. Those who are not trained properly in the procedure might do it wrong and the patient would suffer burns and blisters.

The hair follicle contains melanin pigment which the lasers are aimed at. When the laser is fired, it will not touch the lighter skin surface but will penetrate the dark follicle and kill it. Though a series of treatments will usually not take out every single hair in the treated area, it will reduce the hair in the area by 30 to 75 percent in most cases. Because the hair that is left behind after the treatment is not heavy and not thick, managing it is much easier.

It may take three months before most people see significant improvement in their conditions, and it is during this time that they must have more treatments for positive changes to be possible. That's because the lasers target only growing hair, and at any given time, a number of body hairs are dormant or dead. You will need to return again and again so that hairs are taken out in their right growth cycle.

Those who have light skin and dark hair would probably get the most out of laser hair removal. Because lasers target the skin pigment, they are not really advisable to be used on those with dark or tanned skin. Lasers are not able to tell apart hair melanin from skin melanin. Thus, the treatment would often be the reason for blisters, burns, and scars in the skin of a person who is dark skinned. A test patch is needed and often performed by doctors to see whether the treatment will have negative consequences on a person's skin.

Seek out a doctor whose expertise is hair removal on dark skin if your skin type is the one that rarely burns. While doctors may have experience in hair removal for dark skinned patients, the duration would take longer and the treatment itself would not be as effective. No tanned skin should undergo hair removal. Plastic surgeons and dermatologists are probably the most experienced in doing the procedure, but this doesn't stop the treatments from being offered by dentists and family practice physicians.

Experts state that it is better for patients to be treated in a doctor's office instead of spa. Although much of the industry is unregulated, several states require doctors to perform or supervise laser hair removal. A laser is a wonderful thing, but it's also a dangerous thing in the wrong hands. Half of the dermatologists who answered a survey mentioned that they were increasingly doing repair to damages caused by laser hair removal.

The treatment is almost similar to a rubber band hitting against your skin. If the treatment hurts more than it should, then that means it's not being done right. You will find that though uncomfortable, it's better than getting a shot. Many doctors use cooling sprays, gels or lasers with cooling tips. A redness or crustiness in the skin would result afterward, but immediately disappear.

The body part and the amount of hair in that body part are the things considered in determining the cost of the treatment. While bikini line treatment may cost from $300 to $700 per session, a man's back treatment would already be in the thousands. Around 8 to 10 sessions are needed by some patients.
