When Christ was asked what was the greatest commandment, He told us to love the Lord thy God with all thy mind, with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. So what does this have to do with your weight? Science tells us today that if we are overweight we are at greater risk of several degenerative diseases. The Bible says in 3John 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. If he loves me and wants me to be prosperous and be in good health it would make sense that he would want me to avoid anything that would put me at risk of disease.
If I am involved in any activity that is against the will of God and He reveals it to me through His Word or any other means he chooses and I ask for help he will help me. From the greatest commandment we see that God wants to have a personal love relationship with each of us. If we understand that sin is anything that separates us from God, then sins are the result of being separated from Him. Since the very first day sin entered the world God has been striving to heal our broken relationship. Just as the children of Israel were in bondage in Egypt, many of us are in bondage to sin in the world today. Just as he delivered the children of Israel, if you will let Him, He wants to deliver you too.
If we are overweight it is because at some point we are out of harmony with natural law. It can be physical, mental, social, emotional, or spiritual. As I have coached many people in weight loss I have found that many times the physical food that they eat is not the real problem. It is not so much what you eat as why you eat it. Our bondage in the world today is often rooted in false beliefs. I talked with the man who said he was an atheist. I asked him to tell me about the god that he did not believe in. When he was through I told him I didn't believe in that god either. My God never forces anyone to believe or do anything. My God honors your free choice. I have come to realize that God has laws that govern my health. Paul understood this when he said whatsoever you eat or whatsoever you drink do it all to the glory of God. There is an important principle to understand. The world is by and large in bondage to sin. It is not my place to condemn anyone for their actions. I am not there judge. It is my place to show the love of God to all that I come in contact with by accepting them where they are. God does not condemn you if you are overweight. He wants to help you if you will let Him. That is equally true of any other issue that you may have.
If I am to fulfill the greatest commandment I have a responsibility to my neighbor who is in need. When I have the correct relationship with God I become a conduit through which his love can flow to those in bondage and set them free. The church was never meant to be a rest home for saints but rather a hospital for sinners. All that God should ask of you is that you would have an open mind and a willingness to allow His spirit to work in your heart.
