Tips For Setting Up a Home Office

Working from home is all the rage these days. Many companies offer the perks of working from home, perhaps on a weekly or -monthly basis or even full time, as a means for improving morale and increasing productivity. If you've recently scored a job that allows you to work from home, then you may need some ideas for setting up a home work environment that will maximize your productivity. This article will discuss some of these ideas so you can create a workspace that is tidy, relaxing, and conducive to crossing tasks off your to-do list.

Boundaries are Important

Ideally, you should have a space that is solely dedicated to working. If you don't happen to have a spare bedroom or home office, then it may be wise to block off a corner of your living room or bedroom so you have a space that is strictly business. Without a literal boundary between work and pleasure, the two can easily become mixed, and you may find it difficult to keep them separate. You might even want to set specific rules for yourself about coming and going from your office. For instance, if you're worried that your home life will distract from your job, then mandate that you can't leave your work area for any unnecessary reasons. If you're concerned about getting out of work mode, then establish a rule that banishes you from entering your workspace in the evening and on the weekend.

Get Rid of Distractions

In the same vein as establishing boundaries, you'll want to take measures to remove as many distractions from your workspace as possible. The prospect of watching "The Price is Right" and "The Young and the Restless" may be exciting, but watching TV while you're working isn't advisable. It may also be a good idea to have a phone line that is strictly dedicated to work. That way, you can turn off the phones connected to your "personal" line so you won't be tempted to answer when your slightly senile Aunt Rheba calls to chat. By eliminating distractions, you can better focus on the tasks at hand and may find that you're more productive. The more productive you are, the more likely that your work-from-home arrangement will last!

Stay Organized

There will be little hope for accomplishing anything if your workspace is unorganized. It may not seem entirely necessary at first, but once you get into the swing of things, you'll realize the importance of working at an actual desk. It may be tempting to take over the dining room table because it will provide plenty of room for sprawling out papers and files. However, the more room you have to spread everything out, the more difficult it will be to track things down. With a desk, on the other hand, you'll have drawers for storing pens, pencils, paperclips, a stapler, and other essential supplies, so you'll always know exactly where these items are. You'll also have drawers for organizing files and keeping important resources right at your fingertips.
