Tummy Tuck Exercises Post Pregnancy - Resuming Exercise After A Tummy Tuck

     Regaining your figure after pregnancy is a major goal and for most mothers. Getting a tummy tuck is one way of complementing your exercise and diet efforts to finally reclaim your body or have the body of your dreams. As such, the desire to resume exercise as quickly as possible to maintain this new body exists in virtually every tummy tuck surgery patient. However, the surgery is highly invasive especially in the case of a complete tummy tuck and the body must be allowed the time it needs to rest and recuperate. As a rule, you should consult your doctor before resuming any tummy tuck exercises post pregnancy.

How soon can you resume exercise?

The first few days after a complete tummy tuck are spent resting. The surgery is highly invasive and there is swelling and intense pain. Most patients can hardly stand upright due to the taut skin or sleep on their stomach and if working, they need at least ten days off to recover. However, the pain lessens and the swelling goes down as the days go by. It is important to resume some level of activity to maintain optimum health.

Usually, the doctor will not clear you for an intense exercise regimen until after about 4 months or more but before then, you can resume some level of exercise gradually. You should pay attention to your body even as you resume exercise because it will tell you when you need to stop in order to avoid unnecessary complications.

Exercise resumption regimen

If your surgery has no complications, the doctor will clear you to walk in the first two to three weeks post-surgery. It is advisable to maintain compression on your abdominal region to prevent fluid build-up. Also, start on a moderate pace and cover a reasonable distance, then increase gradually as you continue exercising.

You can increase the intensity of your exercises in about four to six weeks to incorporate exercises such as low intensity aerobics and stationary bike. Incline walking on the treadmill is also appropriate at this stage.

At about eight weeks after surgery, the doctor can clear you for high intensity workouts such as running on the treadmill, full and step aerobics, swimming and low weight strength training. Being cleared for more intense strength training and resistance exercises will take about 3 to 4 months depending on your progress. It might still be important to maintain compression on your abdominal region as the swelling might not resolve until six months have passed.

Combining tummy tuck exercises post pregnancy with a tummy tuck is highly effective in restoring a woman's pre-baby shape. However, tummy tucks are not a miracle cure and effort must be made to maintain the results of the exercises and the tummy tuck by maintenance of a good diet and exercise regimen. On the other hand, care must be taken when resuming exercises. While exercise will promote quick healing, excessive activity will have the opposite effect of loosening the repair, interfering with the sutures and even rendering the surgery useless. The best bet is to strike the perfect balance between the two, which is possible by following your doctor's advice.
