    The surf brand O'Neill started out in less-than-glamorous conditions. Jack O'Neill's early experiments involved lining swimming trunks by stitching and gluing rubber and foam inside: unsurprisingly they didn't protect him from the cold arctic streams in the Bay Area, and weren't very sturdy.
