You have selected a Day Care for your child that believes nutrition and healthy eating habits are fundamental skills for kids. The learning center plays an important role in helping your child learn about and enjoy a variety of nutritious foods each day and serves the healthiest lunches in Boerne. So how would they integrate all things Halloween into the learning for the different age children?
Infants and toddlers are really not into the holiday; however, we do see parents taking their little ones dressed like Superman and Tinker Bell from door to door letting neighbors see their adorable costumes and dropping candy into tiny little bags. The toddlers love the treats but wise parents only allow one treat at a time and spaced at good intervals. Toddlers on sugar over-load will never get to sleep or stay asleep.
Once a child reaches three the day care has special programs that are age appropriate. These children have begunto use their communication skills to develop problem solving capabilities. Becoming competent problem solvers is critical to child development since it means that the children understand how to get their needs met through action. They may be too young to understand the history of Halloween, but they are all for dressing up and going out with their older brothers and sisters. Since the day care stresses the importance of good nutrition, the teachers will stress the importance of spreading out all their sugary loot and trying to make it last for weeks. They may even propose sharing with those who were not able to go Trick or Treating.
The preschool children are a great age to teach the history of Halloween. Their little brains absorb so much information. This is the time to explain there are no witches or goblins – just other kids dressed like them. A preschooler’s world opens up in new ways as children improve coordination, learn complex games and begin to interact more with peers. As part of the interaction they may want to tell their class mates what kind of costume they will be wearing if they are going out. Another interaction is sharing ways they have learned to be safe while experiencing Trick of Treat.
School age children who attend after-class programs at a learning center are the ones who really get into the holiday. Unfortunately we see too many young boys parading as zombies, Frankenstein and victims of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It must be a boy thing because the girls are much more sedate. These are the children who are not satisfied with a plastic pumpkin full of booty. They feel they must take their mother’s best pillow cases and have them filled to capacity. This is another good opportunity for teachers and parents alike to remind the kids that healthy eating not only protects their bodies as well as their teeth.
This is a time for them to be reminded about the virtues of sharing their good fortune – not only at day care, but at home and at school, too.
