A Guide For Achieving A Whiter Smile

Teeth become discolored for a number of reasons. Part of the problem often lies in what you eat or drink; for example, drinks like coffee, red wine and tea may all result in issues with the appearance of your teeth. However, everyone is different. Since your diet varies compared to another individual, your teeth will look different as a result. If you are frustrated with the appearance of your teeth, teeth whitening could be the answer you are looking for.

Getting Started

If you are interested in tooth whitening, there are a few things you need to do ahead of time. First, talk to your dentist. Have a conversation about tooth whitening and figure out which method you would like to try. Determine what your natural tooth color is, since you do not want your teeth to look funny when this is all over with. In addition, if you try and whiten too much, your teeth could become sensitive. Finally, your dentist can help you figure out why your teeth are discolored. A stain resulting from a lot of red wine, for example, may need to be treated differently than a stain resulting from smoking.

Receiving Treatment

For the vast majority of people, tooth whitening is the appropriate answer to discolored teeth. However, those with a number of cavities or with gum disease may want to steer clear of the procedure. In the case of cavities, for example, whitening your teeth could lead to weakening. In addition, if you have a veneer, crown or tooth filling, the whitening will not apply. There could be other options that are better suited to you in those cases.

Whitening Teeth

There are a number of ways to go about the whitening process. You can purchase whitening strips or gels in the store and apply them to your teeth. Whitening toothpaste is also an option, although it typically does not work as well as the strips and gels. If you want professional results, bleaching could be the answer. This can be done by a professional or at home. Finally, if your teeth are discolored or chipped, you may want to have them bonded before you do anything else.

Professional Treatment

Professional whitening is also an option. Your dentist has the capability to help out with this in his office; if you are interested in the procedure, talk to him or her about it at your next checkup. Typically, the dentist puts a bleaching gel on your teeth, something that requires precision. Your unique situation determines how long the bleaching gel is applied for, but the process normally does not exceed thirty minutes. Should your teeth be very sensitive to the gel, the dentist may need to stop application sooner rather than later.

You could apply a bleaching gel at home if you would like. It is less powerful than the product the dentist uses, and application takes longer than in the office. Generally, you will apply it over the course of two weeks. It involves putting trays on your teeth for a few hours a day until you achieve the color you want. This gives you control over the process and is also a more affordable option. However, it is not as quick and convenient as the dentist's application.
