How To Fix Tuberous Breasts: 2 Underlying Principles Of Treatment

When a lady, especially one in her adolescence, experiences any problems with her feminies looks, it would also affect her self esteem. This is definitely what you can expect to happen with such a condition as tuberous breasts. Fortunately, we live in a time when technology has advanced enough to afford effective treatment options for this condition.

Various critical aspects would first have to be evaluated before embarking on treatment of tuberous deformity. First, a qualified medical practitioner would have to assess the severity of your particular case. The specific incidence would also be evaluated to determine its particular classification, since different varieties require different methods of intervention.

Apart from the technical aspects of treatment, a patient's expectations would also play a key role in the treatment process. This is due to the fact that plastic surgery does play an aesthetic role, beyond correcting physical deformities. Therefore, an expert surgeon would have to ensure that patients have realistic expectations of the outcome of surgery. This would avoid any disappointments just because things don't turn out according to unrealistic expectations.

How to Fix Tuberous Breasts: Key Underlying Principles of Tuberous Deformity Treatment

A 2013 study published in the journal, Seminars in Plastic Surgery - compiled by Sebastian Winocour, MD, MSc and Valerie Lemaine, MD, MPH, FRCSC - provides an overview of the types of procedures utilised in correcting tuberous deformity. Generally, such operations would involve mastopexy, augmentation, a combination of augmentation and mastopexy, or augmentation preceded by some form of tissue expansion.

However, all these procedures have certain key underlying principles that determine how they are carried out. Two such principles include:

i. Expansion of the Constricted Breast Base

In cases of tuberous deformity, the base of your breasts would exhibit some extent of constriction. Hence, treatment would require releasing this tissue in order to restore the proper, natural form and appearance of your breast.

Since the first official description of management of tuberous deformity by releasing the constricted breast base, elaborated by Rees and Aston in 1976, numerous techniques have been devised to achieve this objective. Such techniques include anterior approaches, posterior approaches, as well as rearrangement with parenchymal flaps.

However, in severe cases, breast tissue release wouldn't be effective on its own. Use of an implant would then be required in order to fully restore a natural look. Some form of classification is used to identify the different levels of severity, as well as the relevant treatment modality for each instance:

- Type 1 defects present the least severe cases, which can be more easily rectified through radial incisions.

- Type 2 defects are a bit more severe; hence, additional support would be necessary using implants.

- Type 3 defects, being the severest cases, would require permanent implants preceded by tissue expansion.

ii. Lowering the Inframammary Fold

When undertaking surgery, plastic surgeons normally demarcate specific regions of the breast. This is necessary in order to indentify the specific regions to within which to apply incisions when carrying out surgery for different classifications of tuberous deformity:

- In the case of type 1 deformities, a subcutaneous dissection would be performed in the inferolateral inferior quadrant.

- On the other hand, a type 2 deformity would require a subcutaneous dissection within the bilateral inferior quadrant.

- Type 3 deformities, however, require much more extensive dissection than the earlier two, involving both superior and inferior subcutaneous dissections.
