Orthodontics - Understanding Orthodontic Treatments

Orthodontics is a type of dentistry that helps to correct crooked teeth or teeth that are not properly aligned. This is in a bid to improve the appearance of the teeth. These specialists use devices such as braces to help correct and align teeth. The treatment is broad and can use a wide variety of devices. This of course depends on your problem. In some cases, teeth have to be removed for the procedure to be successful. If the braces are worn correctly, results are achieved in 18 to 24 months. There are cases that are more complicated, and the treatment process may take longer.

Causes of crooked or misaligned teeth

Problems affecting proper development of teeth often run in the family. This implies that there are particular genes you might inherit that would affect how your teeth will develop. However, in most cases, the cause cannot be attributed to any known factor. In some instances the misalignment is due to an accident or even persistent thumb sucking. To avoid these problems in future, baby teeth need to be taken care of properly and thumb sucking discouraged.

Candidates for orthodontist treatment

Generally, people whose teeth and jaws fail to develop normally are in need of this treatment. The problem with misaligned teeth is that they make it hard for one to maintain proper oral hygiene. In severe cases, this misalignment can affect the face, giving it a disproportional shape. This can result in psychological problems and low self-esteem. This problem is more prevalent in teenagers and should be rectified in good time.

Other teeth problems

There are several common teeth problems that necessitate orthodontic treatment:

Protruding teeth: This mainly affects the upper teeth. It is best to deal with these teeth immediately because they are prone to damage in the event that you fall or for those who practice contact sports.

Crowding: Adult teeth may not grow normally causing overcrowding and teeth to grow in the wrong position.

Asymmetrical teeth: In some cases, you will find that the upper and lower teeth are not aligned. This gives them a crooked appearance that needs to be rectified.

Deep bite: This happens when the lower teeth are covered by the upper ones excessively.

Reverse bite: This occurs when the upper teeth bite into the lower ones.

Impacted teeth: This is when adult teeth fail to come through because they grow in the wrong position.

Open bite: This mostly occurs due to prolonged thumb sucking, causing the lower and upper teeth to fail to meet. Normally, the upper teeth should fall on the lower ones.

When should treatment start?

Orthodontic treatment for kids should be started when all the teeth have developed. For most of them this happens at the age of 12 or 13. There are certain instances when treatment may be necessary before this period. For adults, the procedure can be done at any age, but options are more limited for adults. Fortunately, orthodontic treatment is widely available and a full examination can be performed before administering any treatment.
