Are you preparing to give your home a new look with the help of a fresh layer of paint? Whether applying it to the inside or the outside of your home, a fresh layer of paint can go a long way toward giving your home a facelift. At the same time, traditional forms of paint can cause a whole host of health problems, including fatigue, dizziness, headaches and even cancer, asthma and heart disease. Therefore, it is worth your effort to explore other paint options that are better for your health as well as for the environment.
Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are toxins contained in paints and adhesives that are harmful to your health. In order to reduce your health risks, you should select paints that do not contain VOCs or that have 200 grams or less VOCs per liter of paint. If you are purchasing varnish, look for those with 300 grams per liter or less. Obviously, the less VOCs contained in the paint, the better. If you really want to make sure you are getting the best paint possible, select those that are labeled as having "zero-VOC" or that have the Green Seal on them. Those that are labeled as "zero-VOC" must have 5 grams of VOCs per liter or less, while Green Seal paints must have 50 grams of VOCs per liter or less.
Natural Interior Paints
You can also avoid using a paint that contains VOCs by purchasing natural interior paints and wood finishes. There are many different types of primers, paints, finishes, stains, sealers and waxes that are made with natural materials such as:
* Natural plant dyes
* Natural plant oils
* Natural plant waxes
Clay paint, which is made from earth-based mineral, is one of the most common forms of natural paints to select from. These paints are a good option for those who like an earthy look. In addition, clay paints adhere quite nicely to most inside surfaces and generally only require to coats to complete.
Unfortunately, clay paints are generally more expensive than those that are petroleum-based. In addition, your choice of colors and textures is limited. In fact, clay paint is generally only available in white, blue and orange tints. Furthermore, clay paints can only be used indoors and on surfaces that are not going to be washed because washing the paint can actually cause damage.
Lime wash, which is made from limestone, is another eco-friendly natural paint that you might choose to use. Unlike clay paint, lime wash can be used outdoor as well as indoors. In addition, it is available in a wide variety of colors. It should be noted, however, that lime wash can only be used on porous surfaces such as wood, brick and plaster. In most cases, several layers of lie wash are required to complete the job.
Simply put, there are many paint options available to you, so there is no reason to put your health at risk by using a paint that contains VOC. Therefore, you should be sure to explore all of your options in order to find the paint that is right for you.
